You're invited to stop by for our spring open greenhouse tour at RainFresh Harvests on Saturday, May 8th. We will be having informal tours, between 9 am to 3 pm and will be available to answer your questions.
See how Clean Energy is helping to grow crops year-round, off-the-grid in a biointegrated greenhouse that is powered by renewable energy.
You will be able to see solar photovoltaic panels and a wind turbine that produce electricity, as well as a solar thermal system for heating. Also featured are aquaponics, worm composting and other sustainable agriculture practices.
This spring marks 5 years of operation of the renewable energy systems. During this past year we:
- Replaced the damaged wind turbine with an upgraded model with improved performance
- Increased thermal mass storage with additional water barrels
- Set up drip irrigation for field raised beds
- Planted more basil to increase production
Thanks to all of the support by customers that are asking for fresh locally grown food, and to the grocers and chefs that make the effort to buy locally. Our primary customers have been Northstar Café (3 locations, now including Third and Hollywood) and Whole Foods (2 locations). In addition to supplying Café Del Mondo and Vicenzo's Convenient Elegance since 2008, we added a number of new customers in 2009 including the Greener Grocer, J. Liu, Luna Burgers, Made From Scratch, Matt the Miller's Tavern, Tucci's,and Z Cucina .
Hopefully we will grow enough this year to expand to a few more locations. Please continue to cast your food votes by shopping or dining at businesses that support local growers.
Plant sales will be limited this spring to Basil plants. (These are certified organic @$2.25 per 3 inch container).
Since parking is limited, if possible, please car pool. Directions and more information may be found on our website www.rainfreshharvests.com
